I was playing on a large ring with a friend terminal night and we swapped horns for a while. He had an early V1. He got his horn early when Fred Powell was there. He had ordered a horn online. When he got it the valve stems weren't centered in the holes- he called the factory and talked to Powell who offered to bandy out the horn. My friend asked Fred to pick him a horn.
The horn is peachy! Very nice sound, great valves, first-class intonation, overnice blow.
What is the likelihood that a new one would play like his? He says the one he returned played just as proficient. Has anyone tried the ones from the terminal few years? Non much oppurtunity to try horns hither, so would take to purchase online.

They are a decent horn. The valve section is equally good as whatsoever one out there. The bell is practiced but blows big. The key is a good leadpipe and from my experience, your best bet is to get a skilful V1 and then accept Charlie Melk put i of his pipes on the horn with one of his receivers. I really had Charlie put a leadpipe and a bell on mine. Plays great but information technology stays in the box now every bit a backup as I play a Melk Cardinal Trumpet as my #1 horn.

I know GR has nearly vi V1'southward in his possession. All are skillful horns and the ones with the smaller venturis play the best.

My get-go trumpet teacher (last time I talked to him) alternated betwixt a V1 and a Bach 37. He liked it quite a bit - but I don't remember always trying it though and so I can't requite personal experiences.

I would consider his a lot improve than "a decent horn". Mayhap he got a adept 1. It was one of those horns you go along thinking about. I played a Selmer TT a few years back that was the same mode- still wish I had tried to buy that horn. Sometimes you run beyond a horn that merely has something special that makes it a "great" horn. I'd say my Bach is a good one. I similar my Recording a lot. The Ballad cuts really well, only is non really an all around horn. I had a golden plated WT for about 7-8 yrs that never suited me, just was still a "skilful" horn. None of them have been truly "slap-up". His V1 and the Selmer a few years back were truly special.

I used to play a Vintage One and it was a peachy horn. Nicholas Payton played one for several years as did Jeremy Pelt and they both sounded like a meg bucks on the V1.

The Powell era V-1s are outstanding horns - I've endemic a couple of those, (1B-46, and a 1B-34) both of which were 24K gold plated. With either horn, I never had issues with audio, pitch, blend, etc. They were just nifty horns. Easy to play. Here's a review I found from a few years back:

http://jazztimes.com/articles/20084-conn-vintage-one-trumpet

Fred Powell was one of the best when he designed the V-1, and he has come a long way since so! If you want to go a fiddling further down that path, give Fred a telephone call and schedule a shop visit! He has so many nifty options to fit all kinds of different player'south needs. If your heart is assault a 5-i, beginning looking at some of the older ones, or if that's non possible, play test as many equally you tin earlier you brand a purchase. Some of the newer ones I've played just don't measure up, although one of my students bought a newer one that is excellent. Attempt before you purchase!!!

Yeah, I believe Powell was still there in 2001. Which bell does the horn have?

Uh ... I'one thousand not sure. Is it just the deviation between 1B and 1BR, with the R indicating more than copper in the alloy?

Ane affair to pay attention to, as Brian mentions, is the venturi size. The official word, as I understand it, is that the model number indicates the venturi size. For instance the 46 should mensurate .346 and the 34 should measure .340. Adept luck with that. I have five-6 V1 leadpipes in the shop right now and not one matches the model number. These pipes are from about vii-eight years agone.

Too worth mentioning: Bach's official spec for venturi size is .345 but all of my favorite Bach's mensurate .340-.343.

Every bit nearly volition land here, Fred builds an EXCELLENT trumpet! Just he is the hardest working human being in show business concern. So do have patience and you will not be disappointed!
I have two 2009 POWELLs that I bought a twelvemonth and a half ago here on TH. And, lets but say... I at present can care less almost any other horn I've played in the past.
If you ask me, the discussion CUSTOM is just a marketing strategy. So I don't recall y'all will be deplorable if you lot don't have your POWELL custom congenital to your specs. These horns are built by a professional and are made for professionals.

So here nosotros are all talking about our custom horns in a thread request of the new V1's are any good

So apparently at that place are already "vintage" V1's? Has at that place been a definite decline in their quality, or are they just not quite a Powell?

Come to retrieve of it the simply non-custom Bb I own is a Conn 22B. From 1925. Was that a custom horn, for somebody? Harry Glantz wasn't with the NY Symphony til '28, and so I'm non certain I believe what I've heard nigh the New York Symphony model being made for him.
